Jkk mods the Aigo MID with 3G

Jkk has been playing with the first MID that has world-wide availability, the Aigo P8860 [Portal page]. Being the amazing modder that he is, he has already managed to put 3G in it, and has a video demo of the MID browsing with 3G which later goes into details of the mod itself. The [...]

Jkk has been playing with the first MID that has world-wide availability, the Aigo P8860 [Portal page]. Being the amazing modder that he is, he has already managed to put 3G in it, and has a video demo of the MID browsing with 3G which later goes into details of the mod itself. The video which you can see below, shows various sites including YouTube playback which works great, and I am happy to see that scrolling looks to be very smooth and easy to use in the web browser. The MID manages to load Engadget quite quickly and all of this has my hopes high for MIDs to deliver the full internet experience in your pocket when they finally start ending up in consumer’s hands.

Sorry for the missed time but we had some issues over the past week and were thus unable to make many updates to our site, hopefully we will be back at full strength very soon. I suppose the bottom line is that we’re essentially back in business and ready to do what we can to be as informative as possible.

This doesn’t have anything really to do with our ost but we think you should see this anyway.

MiND UMPC with GPS Navigation

Clarion has been showing off their new “Mobile Internet Navigation Device” (yet another friggin’ acronym) or MiND at Computex this week. This looks to us like a MID “Mobile Internet Device” but it comes with GPS capabilities and gives prospective consumers a choice of several colors scheme.

Clarion MiND

This device has a 5.2”  WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen display, based on Linux OS (at least in the demoed version), with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. Reports are you can get this for around the $700 price range which in our opinion is a little steep if one is only looking for a MID type device, however this also allows for multimedia and office type applications.

Clarion is also planning for a “Pro” version of this to sport a 3G WWAN, however, no details on pricing as yet.

You can see the so called WiND in action below.

Telson the 3D Gaming UMPC from MasterImage

UMPCPortal.com posted an article about this new proof-of-concept UMPC from little known Korean-based manufacturer MasterImage. Its called Telson and the 3D screen can be seen without the need for any special glasses; here’s a low res pic of this concept device, by the way I doubt the photo does this screen any justice:

New HP iPaq smartphones finally reality

HP has launched two new iPaq smartphones and one of them is the 'Silver' that has been spotted by us before. The iPaq Data Messenger and iPaq Voice Messenger are clearly aiming at the 'general' consumer and both have something for everybody.

We have already spotted the 'Silver', officially called the iPaq Voice Messenger. The device has GPS and WiFi. Furthermore, the quad band device has fast internet through UMTS, HSDPA and even HSUPA.

HP iPAQ Voice Messenger

We are used to be surprised by the specs of HP. This device has an built-in 3.1 megapixel camera including a flash. The 2.4 inch display is supporting 65 thousand colours, like we can of course expect from Windows Mobile 6.1. It also has a QVGA resolution (320 x 240 pixels) and the full QWERTY display is easy to use.

The Voice Messenger has a 1260 mAh battery and navigation software that can be used for free for 30 days.

iPaq Data Messenger
HP did also introduce iPaq Data Messenger; a slider smartphone that has a 2.8 inch display. The device has of course the new Windows Mobile 6.1 and behind the touchscreen a QWERTY keyboard is hiding, which is comparable with the Voice Messenger.

The two devices do not really differ that much. The Data Messenger also has UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, WiFi, GPS, Assisted GPS, a 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and much more. The battery does differ: it has 1140 mAh, but this difference is very small.

The iPhone is the Apple netbook?

Many others have written about it. NYTimes. ARS Technica, Liliputing, GearLog are just a few. This taken direct the article at Small-Laptops.

Jobs on netbooks: “As we look at the netbook category, that’s a nascent category. As best as we can tell, there’s not a lot of them being sold. You know, one of our entrants into that category if you will is the iPhone, for browsing the Internet, and doing email and all the other things that a netbook lets you do. And being connected via the cellular network wherever you are, an iPhone is a pretty good solution for that, and it fits in your pocket.

I love that attitude. He’s effectively saying that MIDs are where it’s at isn’t he. Isn’t he? The ‘Not a lot being sold’ part is probably a nod towards their 7 million iPhone sales.

I agree with Jobs and believe the Netbooks segment is a dangerous segment to be playing in right now. I believe that the action will start to take place in other segments soon. It will only take one well-executed MID/PMP product to make heads turn and for people to realise that most of what they do on their netbooks (surfing, reading emails, IM, videos) can be done by a device that fits in the pocket. Yes I know some of you use netbooks as laptops for inputting text but to be honest, I don’t think that inputting reams of text is what most people are doing with their netbooks. When that special product comes out and when those heads turn, people like Samsung, Toshiba, ASUS could get caught out with big zero-margin netbook stocks. In fact the whole Intel Atom ecosystem could get caught out if that device turns out to be based on an ARM core and gets followed up by a raft of cool ARM-based devices from established players.

Jobs will need a product to replace the iPod in the next 18 months and a combined video and Internet device is perfect for that. There’s almost no question that Apple will do a 4-6" device and that the technology and software is there to be able to do it but the question is, when will the market and carriers be ready? End of 2009? Beginning of 2010? Apple must have tens of prototypes in the lab ready to choose from and they’re probably doing the sensible business thing by waiting.
